10-Kilometer Hike

This is a great alternative for scouts 14 or older and adult leaders - that are Scouting Outing veterans. The hike will start at the flagpole immediately following the opening ceremony, which starts at 9:00 AM Saturday morning. Hikers will return to the Scouting Outing campsite mid-afternoon, after lunch.

Trail description:

Hikers will have the unique opportunity of being on the American Discovery trail, the Buckeye trail, the Burr Oak Backpack trail, and the North Country trail concurrently. (Click on the images above for more information about these trails) The hike will start along the shoreline of Burr Oak Lake and come upon the “Cave of Leaves”, “Table Rock”, as well as the “Buckeye Cave” before stopping for lunch at the ranger station. The trail back will lead through the scenic woods of Burr Oak State Park, allowing the hiker to encounter challenging terrain and witness a variety of wildlife. The trail is rated Moderately Difficult.

Distance:

Distance is calculated using the "New Stratsville Section Map" provided by the Buckeye Trail Association.

Morning hike (Buckeye Trail):
        Points 7 to 8: 2.8 miles
        Points 8 to 9: 1.3 miles
        Points 9 to 10: .4 miles
After Lunch hike (Beeline Trail):
        Points 10 to 9: .4 miles
        Points 9 to 8: 1.0 miles
        Points 8 to 7: 0.9 miles

Total Distance is: 6.8 miles exceeding the 6.2 miles required for the 10-kilometer hike.

All scouts and leaders wishing to participate in the 10-kilometer hike must register prior to the hike. Registration forms for the hike can be filled-out at the registration tent. A special patch is available for individuals that complete the hike. The cost of the patch is $2.00.
